Since when is it wrong, illegal, or unconstitutional to state one's opinion? I ask this question because Mel Gibson recently apologized for stating that "Jews are responsible for starting all the wars in the world."
But that statement is simply his opinion, or was his opinion on the evening that he was arrested for drunken driving. And yes, Mel Gibson should apologize for driving while under the influence of alcohol, and for endangering other people's lives.
But there's no way in hell that he should be forced (via political correctness, or to save his career in Hollywood) to say he's sorry for a statement that, quite honestly, is backed by quite a bit of evidence. Also, when taken in the context of what has been said about him during the past week (not to mention before and during the release of his movie, The Passion of the Christ), it is my opinion that he should have stood his ground and actually used the event to begin a debate on this very subject.
But instead, Gibson was initially called a "terrorist" by one mainstream publication, and referred to as a "lethal weapon" in another. In this context, it doesn't seem like what Mr. Gibson said was all that offensive, to say the least.
