Review: V for Vendetta

“Remember Remember the Eleventh of September”

If you had a choice between siding with an anti-New World Order terrorist who wanted to blow-up Washington, DC, or else the bloated, corrupt sow politicians who reside in our nation’s capital, who would you choose?

This premise (with England being the locale) lays the foundation in V for Vendetta, a superb new anti-State movie that follows in the tradition of other classics like 1984, Animal Farm, A Clockwork Orange, and Blade Runner. The quandary obviously facing Hollywood was the reality of a post 9-11 terrorist waging war on the Establishment. Would the American public accept a mass-murdering, explosives-loving, anarchy-preaching subversive as their hero?

I can’t answer for anyone else, but I will say, personally, that we need more heroes like “V” in not only this country – but the entire world – to battle the global organized crime syndicate which currently exists. Yes, if given an option between the repulsive vipers who slither through the halls of Congress and our White House – or an unleashed, fearless rebel waging war on them – I’d align 100% with the revolutionary every single time.

This dilemma couldn’t be clearer than at a crucial point in the film when Evey (Natalie Portman) is faced with either pulling a lever or not. If she does, a subway train packed to the gills with TNT will begin its course toward London’s Parliament building. I won’t give away any more of the plot, but as this scene unfolded, I turned to Lisa Guliani in the movie theater and asked, “Pull the lever or not?”

Without hesitation, she smiled slyly, “Pull it!”

Nodding my head, I agreed, “You’re damn right – pull it!”

The result is one of the most gratifying, inspirational scenes ever laid on the silver screen, and as the final credits rolled, I began clapping my hands at what I had seen. Many of the other movie-goers didn’t quite seem to get it, but as we drove home afterward, Lisa commented on this scene.

“I can relate to those political revolutionaries who are willing to die for what they believe in. I was so into it. I was so there. I had tears running down my face!”

Yes, folks, if we want to save this country, we have to emulate this movie’s final, triumphant scene. It’s that simple. If we’re not willing – en masse – to go to those lengths and seek that end, then we might as well flush the whole damn thing down the drain.

Viva “V” and long live his spirit of chaos!
