Following his appearance on WING TV (August 18, 2005), I began pondering all that Mordechai Vanunu has endured during the past two decades. After exposing Israel’s nuclear secrets at Dimona, he was betrayed, set-up, arrested, convicted, and ultimately imprisoned – all unfairly. The length of his incarceration was eighteen years, eleven of those spent in solitary confinement. Worse, his harsh treatment in the Israeli penal system was not due to any crimes he had committed, but instead for his religious conversion from Judaism to Christianity. In his captor’s eyes, this decision was unacceptable, and Vanunu was labeled a traitor and enemy of the people.

Now, nearly twenty years later, Vanunu is a “free man,” except, of course, for the multitudinous restrictions placed upon him by the Israeli government. But despite these impositions, Vanunu remains defiant. To witness this heroic stance, all one has to do is view Lisa Guliani’s photo gallery Vanunu Photo Gallery to see a man who will stand-up in the face of power, and who will stand-up in the face of a monster – both arms raised above his head, fingers extending with a double “V” victory/peace salute. This is a man of extreme courage and hope who personifies the human spirit; and needless to say, we couldn’t respect him more at WING TV.
